Here’s a seemless Croydon link to the post below. I’ve been reading acouple of fascinating books by JOY THACKER and NELLIE SHAW about the anarchist WHITEWAY COLONY in the Cotswolds. The colonists came out of THE CROYDON BROTHERHOOD CHURCH and Joy Thacker reprints an anarchist ticket for a social evening in Croydon in 1897 which is suprisingly modern in style – the kind of ticket I might have written:
‘ CROYDON ANARCHIST GROUP – LIVE AND LET LIVE – SOCIAL EVENING – MONDAY JANUARY 25TH 1897
BROTHERHHOD CHURCH TAMWORTH ROAD COMMENCING AT 7PM
MUSIC! DANCING! CONTRAPTIONS!
Tikets of admission, including light refreshments, 6d
BOMBS EXTRA. BRING YOUR OWN DYNAMITE
Well good. Incidently if there’s any modern day anarchists around Croydon give me a shout.
