Protest outside cinema in Chesterfield yesterday. While southern tories are flocking to cinemas to see the film up north cinemas are empty – in Tyneside only 2% of seats were booked! The t-shirt worn above shows that Thatcher’s funeral will be similarly greeted across the class divide.

Our household bills are through the roof, gas, electricity & even our weekly grocery bills are all sky high. This is what Thatcher left us and I for one would like nothing more than to see the bitch burning on a heap of her own shit.

Much as I despise Thatcher I remember that under Blair and Brown’s watch far more people died in the wars they waged, services were privatised that Thatcher never dared to, the gap between rich and poor got wider than under Thatcher, the Thatcher anti-union laws stayed in place while the Union bosses continued to fund Labour, Legal Aid and civil liberties were trashed under Labour and Labour carried on selling Council homes and built hardly any. While we rightly loathe Thatcher,we would do well to remember what the scum in the Labour Party did to us all when they had the power to really make changes.

You’re right – it was more of the same under b-liar and G Dubya Brown, but it was set up by her – the things she put in place were always going to grow and expand, and become worse. Labour wasn’t Labour any more – Thatcher had already sold parliaments soul to the city, and all “our” MPs were bought and paid for by the rich. Thatcher put in place the seeds of what’s happening today – the rest of it couldn’t have happened without her greed and treachery. We need to stop thinking in terms of labour, tory, even lib-dems, being different from each other – Parties are poison; they are ALWAYS going to be corrupt. I am a bit confused. I have read that the Thatcher family and close supporters detest the film and I was looking forward to see Streep portraying her as the stupid cow she always was, but now completely ga ga. Basically I am not worried even if they present her as Joan of Arc, as the truth is available for all to see. To Americans who see her as a champion in the battle with communism it is worth stressing that she outsourced energy production to eastern European regimes in order to defeat an incompetent leadership of the miner’s union, and succeeded there only by nationalising the police into her own private Mugabe style army which attacked mining communities. Someone has rightly pointed out here that Labour did sod all to undo her damage despite over 10 years in power. A lesson for the future perhaps.
What was incompetent about the NUM leadership? My impression of Scargil is that he was a relatively competent trade union leader. He for example made the correct decision to not to participate in the branch delegates debate on whether or not to hold a ballot; encouraging people to think for themselves rather than to arrive at decisions out of loyalty.

@ Climate Gate Scargill was incompetent for many reasons. During the first week of the strike miners were extending the fight, blocking motorways etc. Scargill stopped that. He incompetently floated the union funds around the world and lost a hell of a lot. He could not build up a relationship with other sections of the workers. I had a hell of a time chairing meetings of striking miners and lorry drivers who should not have been at each others throats. His image of a mining victory was based on the portrait he had of himself leading a crush at the Saltney battle, The revolution was not going to emerge from the miners union in this way. An early lesson in industrial fights is how to get the people back to work without a crushing defeat, thinking ahead to the next fight. Scargill presided over a crushing and humiliating defeat. Main problem: a centralised leadership is not the solution. Now see who Thatcher had on her side – remember the American she put in charge who wore a carrier bag on his head, and a bunch of tory imcompetents. They should have been outsmarted. But Scargill was too concerned with repeating the previous strategies. As for decisions out of loyalty: God, it upset me to hear miners singing the Christian/football hymn – ‘Arthur Scargill, we’ll support you ever more’. I knew then they had lost
So look to the future: new energy, shale oil and get the workers in control of the energy revolution on our doorstep.

The private companies so mismanaged the mines with regard to output, safety and inefficiency that during the war the country could not prioduce enough coal for the war effort….the government was forced to nationalise the industry and bring in proper apprenticeship schemes and effective trade union collective bargaining……the same problems existed with shipbuilding and steel, and within the construction industry where profit and inneficient tin-pan companies were unable to cope with the housing crisis
