Robinson’s political nous seems to have deserted him. After a non-productive 5 months in the obscure BFP he has now left. Claiming he had ‘looked into the future’ and it didn’t feature the BFP the mystic meg of the EDL now says he wants to transform the EDL into a political party and contest the Euro elections in 2014. He made this announcement this afternoon – whether he intends to take the EDL off the streets and into the polling booths is unclear – and may come as a shock to the rest of the EDL. Fighting the Euro elections will be a dud because he will come up against a resurgent UKIP who will be far better placed to take advantage of the right wing xenophobe vote. Robinson made a tactical blunder joining the BFP and there will be plenty of others who think he has made another one. He is making the same journey as Griffin – from the skinheads to the suits – with the same farcical outcome guaranteed. Robinson will brave the cries of ‘sell out’ and take a few with him but it won’t be long before a new street fuhrer emerges but ‘for you Tommy the war is over’.
Not really surprised, as fash go the EDL leadership have always been comedians. It was pretty clear from the first time he gurned out of a TV screen at us that Yaxo intended the EDL as a personal vehicle to celebrity and easy money and now the tank has run dry. As he never had the benefit of mentoring from the likes of John Tyndall – therefore lacking Griffin’s second-hand speaking skills and slimy business nous – on the local level he and his ‘party’ will become a snack for the BNP and NF who are themselves losing out electorally to UKIP and increasingly hardline Tories. The worry is what will replace the EDL on the streets – as times get shitter my money is on something more extreme and more openly steered by neo-nazi ideology.
