I#ve always been a fan of Great Enoch – the Luddite sledgehammer – and the 200th anniversary of Luddism has been well celebrated in the north of England pricipally thanks to comrades from Huddesfield I think………..though apart from an appearance at the anarchist boookfair great enoch has not caused much stir in the south – shame. Anyway it still going in so dont miss this in York on saturday:
Just to let you know, there’s a commemoration/celebration of the 17 Luddites hung at York 200 years ago this month, which takes place this Saturday in York.
There are details here http://yorkalternativehistory.wordpress.com/2012/12/21/luddites-2013/
I could do with the Great Enoch in my workplace- about to be ‘rationalised’ due to the automation that’s just come in, which we’re told is ‘in our interests to use, because there’ll be fewer staff in future’!- Go figure…
You’ve not been watching antiques shows on daytime tv this afternoon have you? Nice discussion of the Luddites in a museum and a view of Great Enoch behind a glass case.
Saw that as well -needed more troops in 2 Yorkshire towns than in fighting Napoleon, because they were convinced there was going to be a revolution
No idea what the programme was – the incongruity of Tim Wonnacott narrating it (before he breezily waved orf this ‘social history’). Nice to see that Horsfall copped it – shame about the brutal repression after.
Are you absolutely sure it was ‘Bargain Hunt’? Had a brief look at iPlayer and can’t see anything relevant. Yesterday’s show was from Edinburgh. Would love to know because I want to screencap it. Ironic BBC give coverage to the Luddites on an Antiques Show but give no coverage to them on their history programmes
OK, so on further investigation, it seems it was Antiques Road Trip!
Yep, and boy, didn’t Enoch look good!
