‘Because the little group began by placing the idea of independent working class self-activity at the centre of of its analysis, as opposed to the parliamentary vanguardism of the Labour Left and the revolutionary vanguardism of the comic opera bolsheviks, it began the work of, in the words of one of its later recruits, the ‘restoration of the libertarian roots of Marxism.’
The early politics of IS -forerunner of the SWP – as seen by one recent blogger talking of ‘defending the IS tradition’ against the degeneracy of the present leadership. All of a sudden there are these thousands of ex-swp ers invoking the libertarianism of Sedgwick, Widgery,Sullivan. Indeed John Sullivan’s pisstake of all the Trot groups is now required reading and his pisstake now seen as prescient analysis.John Sullivan was a member of Solidarity and it seems belatedly many of his ex-comrades are now desperate to claim the libertarian marxist politics that Solidarity exemplified. How comrade Sullivan would laugh. Still if lessons are learned that show the way to libertarian socialism rather than democratic centralism then welcome comrades. I think I’ll give Ken Weller a shou and tell him about the upturn – he’ll find it no less amusing than John sullivan.
Where can we read ‘John Sullivan’s pisstake of all the Trot groups’?
‘As sooon as this pub closes…’ by John sullivan – I think they still have copies in Housmans
