You couldn’t make it up. Here’s the official ‘central committee’ response to anyone going outside of the Party’s little diplock ‘court’ to raise concerns of sexual abuse. Apparently they’ve “circumvented principles by campaigning to overturn conference decisions outside the structures of the party, using blogs and the bourgeois media…This undermining of our democracy should stop forthwith. We reaffirm the right of the Central Committee to impose disciplinary measures for violation of our democratic constitution.”
Are they joking? It’s like a parody of Stalinism. All that’s missing is the final, obligatory reference to ‘fascists’ benefiting from the revanchist’s role in subverting party discipline and democractic centralism.
Whether they know it or not, the SWP are now finished. They’ve become an embarassment and a laughing stock. Nobody can ever take them seriously again. And the implications are obviious:. No more TUC cash, no more BBC interviews, no more nice little front groups to milk. It’s over.
Whilst Leninism (whether in its Tortskyist or Stalinist) manifestations has been dead for decades, it will take many more years for the putrifying corpse to final disintegrate back into usable minerals. Sadly the cadaver of the SWP is likely to be injected with emablming fluid of publicity, well out of keeping with its numbers and influence. This is because for the 40-60 year old Oxbridge hacks who are the main political pundits in the media, were brought for the SWP as the ‘alternative left’ to Labour. They are not resourceful, imaginative or criticla enough to know any different, and will simply phone up the same SWP contacts (some of who are old College mates) for comments and interview appearances.
I have my criticisms of the IWW, but my guess is that they probably have far more members than any Trot group now, but I can’t think of a time I’ve seen any Wob being interviewed or invited onto Question Time.
