My dad used to recite this poem to us every Christmas – and seems now to be just as relevant as when it was written. Thanks to Jan Hevern for tipping me off about this recitation:

And here is my now ‘traditional’ comment offering the abridged, proletarian version recited every Xmas eve in my family…
I well remember my old Gran, after a few Snowballs, reciting her version remembered from her turn of the century childhood.
’twas christmas day in the workhouse,
the pudding came in view,
the raisins, they were many,
the currants, they were few,
up spake a brave old trooper,
he was as bold as brass,
I don’t want your christmas pudding,
stick it up your @rse!
For folk of her generation an inbred fear, loathing and shame associated with ‘the spike’ were still very real.
My Granddad always recites this version
Twas Christmas day In the work house
the snow was biting hard
The poor old paupers sat there eating their bread and lard
in walked the work house inspector
in the dark and dreary walls
A merry Christmas to you all he said
And one replied BALLS
He grabbed that poor old pauper
who’s struggles where in vain
he dragged him to the sxxt house
and flushed the bloody chain!!
GREAT POEM! VERY APT!
I urge other athiests to join the Athiest Society as we look at stamping out this ridiculous control mechanism festival.
There is NO CHRISTMAS
That is a word of herd-conformity for a celebration of a
consumerist corporate gangbang.
THERE ARE NO GODS AND THERE ARE NO MASTERS.
ALL RELIGIONS ARE CULTS-THEY ARE CONTROL MECHANISM. THE THIEVES WHO HAVE STOLE THE EARTHS RESOURCES AND HOLD THEM TO RANSOM FORCE THEIR LANDSCAPE OF REALITY ON TO YOU. ANCIENT TRADITIONS NEED CONDEMNING TO THE PAST-A FUTURE FREE FROM THEIR RESTRICTIONS IS REQUIRED
END THEIR ILLUSION
AND CREATE YOUR OWN CULTURE!
OR CONTINUE BEING A SLAVE TO THEIRS.
It was Christmas Day in England
A terrible, living Hell
With Cameron on the telly
and IDS as well
And they’re all in the scam together
And their mates are in at the kill
The BBC, and Goldman Sachs, and the fucking fuzz as well.
