RAMP-AGE WHEELCHAIR USERS BRIGADE – PRAGUE 1914

wheelchair

As an occasional wheelchair user myself these days been thinking of radical wheelchair users of the past and the noble and heroic GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK comes to mind. Schweik gets his char lady to push him in a neighbour’s bath chair to the recruitment offices of the Austro-Hungarian army where he demanded to enlist. ‘The heroism of a cripple’ ran the Czeck papers delighting in such patriotism. Indeed. Now commemorated in this fine stamp.

Schweik was my introduction to anarchism, or maybe just to the idea that the crafty working classes could run rings round their rulers and have a bit of fun doing it. For any who haven’t read it the 1930s translation is the best.
