  1. Poverty is the big divide in all areas of life. And the consequent disparity is not likely to change, in fact it’ll probably get worse. According to the JRF report ‘The persistence of poverty across generations,’ ‘there is a clear link between childhood poverty and poverty in later life, and this link is becoming increasingly stronger.’

A Crime and Society Foundation study revealed that the top 10% richest Britons are now 4% less likely to be murdered than in the early 1980s, but the poorest 10% are 39% more likely to end up as murder victims. Stephen Dorling, the report author, said, ‘The poorer the place you live in the more likely you are to be murdered. The rate of murder in Britain can be seen as a marker of social harm.’

The Institute for Public Policy Research reported that the residents of the most deprived areas are 2.5 times more likely to be mugged, and burgled than those living in the least deprived neighbourhoods. 59 per cent of children from ‘On Track’ areas were victims of crime in 2004, with more than 25 per cent of boys and 10 per cent of girls from deprived areas having been physically attacked.

The main conclusions of the Shelter Report ‘Chance of a lifetime: The impact of bad housing on children’s lives’ indicates a catalogue of ‘robbed’ future chances – due to ill-health, educational under-achievement and insecurity. There is a 25 per cent higher risk of severe ill-health and disability, during childhood and early adulthood due to poor housing.

Overcrowded housing results in a tenfold greater chance of contracting meningitis, increased risk of tuberculosis and other respiratory problems such as asthma. Consequently many of the children lose sleep, have restricted physical activity and lose out at school. Overcrowding has also been seen as to cause slow childhood growth, that later increases the risk of coronary heart disease.

The poor are poor because the rich are rich, Bash the Rich!

Interesting stats’ vis- murder. Perhaps we should introduce an equal opps policy to ensure that rich people are adequetly represented in the murder statsistics.
